BY the dim glow of gas light in March 1852 printer John Robinson produced the first Wakefield Express newspaper on a press powered by steam. The price was four-and-a-half old pence and the broadsheet editions were created at Southgate, from where the company is still based. Despite the changes in mass communication and lifestyles, today’s Wakefield Express still aims to provide a comprehensive information and commercial vehicle that serves the local community. The four-edition Wakefield Express with its three sections of sport and leisure, motoring and property, is the flagship newspaper of the Yorkshire Weekly Newspaper Group. We are the main provider of news and advertising for the Wakefield area including the Extra Series, the Ossett Observer, the Hemsworth and South Elmsall Express and Profile magazine. Our sister titles based in their own offices are the Pontefract and Castleford Express and Extra the Morley Advertiser, the Selby Times and the Selby Extra and the Reporter series which consists of the Dewsbury Reporter, Batley News, Birstall News, Spenborough Guardian and the Mirfield Reporter and the Reporter Extra.
