IT WAS 25 years ago that miners across Wakefield district downed tools and started a national strike against government plans to close 20 UK pits.
In the year that followed communities rallied together, helping to keep the fight going while bearing the brunt of the crippling poverty forced upon striking miners and their families.

There were bloody riots, tragic deaths and families were torn apart.
But there were good times too, enduring friendships were forged and community spirit strengthened.
